Ancient Cosmetic Dentistry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Etruscans, an ancient people who dwelled in Italy, seem to have tried to replace their missing teeth with unusual substances, such as ivory and bone. Evidence even indicates that they took teeth from animals and other humans (usually from the deceased).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ancient Egyptians also tried their hand at cosmetic dentistry. It seems they hammered seashells into their gums to replace their missing teeth! If they were concerned about dental stains, they rubbed a mixture of pumice stone and vinegar on their teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ancient Romans also had an unusual approach to teeth whitening. They sometimes used urine as a mouthwash! Indeed, the ammonia in urine can break up dental stains, but the unsanitary nature of this whitening treatment makes it a big \u201cick\u201d for most modern individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medieval Cosmetic Dentistry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before dentistry became its own profession, it was often left to barbers to perform dental treatments. They could whiten teeth by filing them and placing a coating on them. Unfortunately, this caused significant damage to the enamel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europeans during medieval times also tried to replace missing teeth with ivory as well as human teeth from deceased individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Move Toward Modern Cosmetic Dentistry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The biggest strides forward in cosmetic dentistry have occurred during the last couple of centuries. For example, porcelain was introduced as a tooth replacement material in the 1700s, and acrylic began to be used in the 1900s as an economical alternative to porcelain. Both of these materials are still popular in modern times!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1930s saw the invention of veneers, though techniques for attaching them were not really reliable until the 1980s. In the 1950s, white tooth filling material was first invented. In the late 1980s, carbamide peroxide first began to be used as a teeth whitening agent. Thanks to its efficacy and safety, it is still a common ingredient in whitening formulas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cosmetic dentistry is still evolving. Thanks to the use of digital imaging techniques, laser technology, and more, it is becoming easier and easier to achieve a perfect smile. Modern humans can truly be grateful for all of the safe aesthetic treatments that are available!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
