If you know that you will soon need to replace your natural teeth with dentures, you may be curious about your treatment timeline. Just how long does it take to get dentures? The answer to that question varies from case to case. Your dentist will be able to explain some important details that are specific to your situation during your consultation. In the meantime, you can read this blog post to get a basic overview of the denture creation process.
Some Patients Are Eligible for Immediate Dentures
If you want to get your new teeth as soon as possible, ask your dentist if you are a candidate for immediate dentures, which you can wear on the same day that your natural teeth get extracted. These prostheses are designed prior to the removal of your natural teeth so they are ready for use right away. Many patients are attracted to this idea because they do not want to live without teeth.
However, it is important to keep in mind that your immediate dentures will need to be replaced relatively soon. That is because your jawbone will go through some changes in the weeks following your extractions.
The Conventional Dentures Treatment Process
If you choose to get conventional dentures, you can expect to go through several steps:
- Preliminary treatment. This can involve extractions, gum disease treatment, and other procedures. Some patients have two rounds of extractions a few weeks apart (your back teeth might be removed teeth, followed later by your front teeth).
- Impressions. Once your gums are ready, your dentist will take a detailed impression of your dental arches, which will serve as the basis for designing your denture. Usually, this happens about six weeks or so after any necessary extractions.
- Denture fabrication. Most dentists work with a laboratory to create dentures. Depending on how busy the lab is, it could take a few weeks for them to fabricate your new prosthetic.
- Denture delivery. Your dentist will make sure your teeth fit you well before sending you home to start adapting to your new smile.
Dentures can rebuild your smile in a short period of time! Talk to your dentist to get a firm idea of when your new smile will be ready.
