As a loving parent, you want what is best for your children. It is your responsibility to look after their health and safety, especially when they are in their youngest years. That can be a challenging task, particularly since you may have heard mixed messages about certain things. For example, many people say that fluoride is vital for kids’ dental development, while a handful of sources claim that it is unsafe for children. The fact is that fluoride is safe for kids! This blog post explains why there is no reason to worry.
Why Some Parents Are Concerned
If you feel unsure about fluoride, you are not alone. You may see alarming claims online or hear stories from friends that raise questions about its safety. Given all of that, it makes sense to pause and ask whether something your child is regularly exposed to could cause harm.
Keep in mind that the negative reports about fluoride stem from cases where kids are over-exposed to it. Indeed, overexposure can have some side effects. For example, fluoride might cause permanent discoloration of the teeth (this condition is known as dental fluorosis and is more a cosmetic issue than a health problem).
In cases of extreme overexposure, there is a chance that fluoride can cause skeletal issues or affect cognitive development. Again, though, it is important to remember that such instances are rare and do not occur due to normal fluoride use, even when it is included in municipal tap water.
Fluoride Is Safe and Beneficial
The reality is that the benefits of fluoride far outweigh any risks associated with it. Here are some reasons why you can confidently integrate it into your child’s oral care routine:
- A large body of research supports the notion that fluoride is safe for kids at recommended levels in tap water, toothpaste, and dental treatments. In fact, an important study from 2022 found no adverse effects on children’s emotional and behavioral development even when they were exposed to it very early in life.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Dental Association, all support its use as a safe way to prevent dental decay.
- Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral, and when children do not get enough of it while their teeth are developing, it can lead to a lifelong increased risk of cavities and dental pain.
There is no reason to be afraid of fluoride! Talk to your child’s dentist to learn how to use this mineral in a way that supports your precious little one’s long-term oral health.
